Lucy’s Story – Chapter 72

"We also have pictures of her from the front and me from behind. She didn’t seem to count those."

We went for a glorious walk down to our neighborhood park yesterday. There is nothing better in the whole wide world than walking with my mom and dad and listening to them talking and laughing together.

When we got to the park my mom handed the camera to my dad and asked him to take some pictures. Now, my mom is the picture taker in our house, so my dad was quite surprised by this and simply said, ‘What?’

My mom told him, ‘Hey, it’s not like it’s rocket science. You just aim and push the button. Come on, I know you can do it!’

Well, my dad got busy and took about 10 pictures of me and my mom together. He even commented, ‘Hey, you’re right, this is pretty easy.’

We all sat down in the grass and my mom was so excited to look at pictures of the two of us together. She became very still as she scrutinized each and every one of them. Then she looked at my dad and very quietly said to him, ‘Hey, not bad for the first time. Lucy looks adorable as usual, but, um, next time maybe take a picture of me FACING the camera with Lucy and not my BACKSIDE?!’

My dad and I looked at each other and burst out laughing…

It was a quiet walk home!

Spring Bulbs!

Beautiful bulbs…two words that will bring you so much joy in the spring!  Fall is the only time you can make it happen.  Plant now and be the absolute envy of your neighbors next spring! Tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinth, allium, and more are waiting for you.

Little Johnny came downstairs bellowing lustily.

His mother asked, "What’s the matter now?"

"Dad was hanging pictures, and just hit his thumb with a hammer," said Johnny through his tears.

"That’s not so serious," soothed his mother. "I know you’re upset, but a big boy like you shouldn’t cry at something like that. Why didn’t you just laugh?"

"I did!" sobbed Johnny.

Stay Green with Houseplants

Houseplants benefit us in so many ways.  Often chosen for the color and texture they add to a room, houseplants are a beautiful addition to any home.  Nothing helps create a pleasant, relaxed mood faster than the addition of a few plants.  Research has shown that the benefits of indoor plants go far beyond decorative, proving that people living in homes and offices with plants have fewer problems with stress-related illnesses.  The group also had lower blood pressure than those living without plants.

Stop out today and pick up several for your home and office.

Q: What do you call a boom-a-rang, that doesn’t come back?
A: A Stick!!!!

Put Your Pruners Away!

Winter is approaching and the landscape is starting to reflect that. Perennials, trees, roses and shrubs are getting ready to go dormant for the winter.

The flowers are fading and the leaves are falling everywhere and it is normal to feel like you need to get out and prune and do other things in the garden. Just remember, whatever you decide to do, DO NOT PRUNE at this point in time!

Go ahead and deadhead your perennials or cut back any foliage that is yellow or brown. There are many perennials that survive our Wisconsin winters better if they are not cut down until spring. So, hold off cutting lavender, ornamental grasses and garden mums. Those fallen leaves in the yard will collect around the stems and protect the root system.

An added bonus is that the seed heads on the ornamental grasses will attract birds for a backyard winter show.

So, just let Mother Nature do her thing. After all, she’s had a few years of experience with this.
