Lucy’s Story – Chapter 75

"Not something you see every day!"

While my dad was outside up on a ladder, he had a ‘bird’s eye view’ of something really exciting going on and couldn’t wait to tell us about it.

I was relaxing (aka napping) on my window seat when that annoying thing rang and I heard my mom say, “Hello?”

Then I heard my mom say, “Really?  Cool, I’ll be right out to see them.”

So, I’m like fully awake now!  Something fun is going on outside!  And me and my mom are going to check it out together…at least that was MY impression!

Now get this, I’m standing next to the door with my Labrador ears perked in that “LET’S GO!” position and my mom says to me, “Sorry, Lucy.  You can’t go outside right now.  You’ll have to watch through the front window.”

Then out she goes!  What?!

I jumped back up into the window seat and looked out to see 8 huge turkeys pecking around in our front yard. A few of them were showing off and standing only on one leg.  Others were flapping their wings and then just like that they slowly walked down the sidewalk and onto the next block.

Once the turkeys were out of sight my mom and dad invited me to join them outside.  Big deal, you say, well, yep, that’s what first came to my mind, but then I thought to myself, “Duh, Lucy girl, who would you rather be with…a gang of wild turkeys or your mom and dad?”

And with a big smile on my face I went and stood as close to them as I possibly could.  I just happened to look up at them as they were looking at each other and then in unison my mom and dad kneeled down together and wrapped their arms around me.

Ain’t love grand!

Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.

Awe your family and friends this holiday season with beautiful festive porch pots!  Our holiday porch pot workshop is just one of our many ‘hands-on’ workshops we offer our customers.  It’s a creative, fun and easy way to decorate for the holidays.

You are welcome to bring in your empty container from home or purchase one of ours.  Containers range from inexpensive plastic to high-end ceramic.  We will provide FREE sand for your container or liner.  (We recommend always using a liner in ceramic containers.)

We offer bundles of assorted fresh greens as a base to start your container. Once you have arranged the greens, you can add to your container from our wide assortment of artificial picks and stems to accentuate your design.

Finished prices range from $35 to $150.  It all depends on how large, how full, and how dramatic you want your container to be.

We do ask that you purchase your porch pot supplies from us and not bring in ones from home or other suppliers.

As with all our workshops, you do the actual planting.  Our experienced design staff will be on hand to assist with your design and arrangement.

If you can’t make it to one of our weekend workshops just stop out to the greenhouse from Monday through Friday, between 9:30-3:30 and do your own porch pot creation.  Please keep in mind that assistance will be limited outside of the workshop weekend hours.

Custom made Holiday Porch Pots!

America’s Best Flowers would be happy to custom make your Holiday Porch Pots.  To order please email Marty Robbins at or call us at 608-222-2269.

Ready To Go

One cold winter evening a family was preparing to go out for an
activity. The wife, who was normally bustling about getting the children
ready to leave, was this evening instead standing right inside the front
door, her arms full of coats.

And instead of being prepared to leave, her four small children were
busy running circles around her playing one of their non-stop games of

Her husband, coming down the stairs, was shocked at the spectacle.

"Honey," he said, "What are you doing just standing there? We’ll be

"Here," his wife replied, handing him the coats with a smug smile, "I
thought that this time you would like to have the privilege of putting
the children into their coats, while I go and honk the horn."

Reginald’s New Diet

Reginald was terribly overweight, so his doctor placed him on a strict diet.
‘I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you’ll have lost at least five pounds, ‘his doctor assured him.
When Reginald returned he shocked his doctor by having lost almost twenty pounds.
‘Why, that’s amazing, ‘the doctor said, greatly impressed, ‘You certainly must have followed my instructions.’
Reginald nodded, ‘I’ll tell you what though, I thought I was going to drop dead on the third day.’
‘Why, from hunger?’ asked his doctor.
‘No, from all that skipping.’

Our Kitchen

People come and go in our lives, for lots of reasons.  The holidays are a time when memories of some of those folks surface.  Sometimes making us happy, sometimes not.  In my previous life, I had a wonderful mother-in-law.  I didn’t know it then, but I sure do now.  She passed away last month at the age of 97.  Listening to my kids talk about her over the past few weeks triggered memories of the many Thanksgiving dinners we enjoyed at her home.  Of the turkey, which is still the best I have ever had, of her wonderful candied sweet potatoes and giblet dressing, of the best pumpkin pie ever (her tricks included no cloves and lots of cinnamon) and of her very own cranberry relish jello.

I have spent the last two days digging through mountains of recipes looking for her jello recipe.  No luck so far.  I have googled and googled and there seems to be a lot of variations out there.  My son is coming for Thanksgiving, and I want to make it for him.  Does anybody have a recipe that starts with raspberry jello and includes apples, nuts and celery along with the following cranberry relish?  Please email me at

Fresh Cranberry Orange Relish

Ocean Spray’s Classic recipe
  • 1 unpeeled orange, cut into eighths and seeded
  • 1 12-ounce package Ocean Spray® Fresh or Frozen Cranberries, rinsed and drained
  • 3/4-1 cup sugar *

Place half the cranberries and half the orange slices in food processor container. Process until mixture is evenly chopped. Transfer to a bowl. Repeat with remaining cranberries and orange slices. Stir in sugar. Store in refrigerator or freezer.

Makes about 3 cups.

NOTE: May also be prepared in a food grinder.

Stir some into mayonnaise for use as a spread on turkey sandwiches.

*Use Splenda for a low sugar version.
