"When it comes to life the critical thing
is whether you take things for granted
or take them with gratitude.”-

G.K. Chesterton

Come Out Anytime – You’re Always Welcome

I had a phone call yesterday from a customer with a gardening question.  Not an unusual event.  We are thankful for every opportunity we get to talk with you, answer your questions and help you have beautiful gardens.  But this conversation was a bit different.  At the end of these calls, I always invite the caller to come out anytime and enjoy the quiet beauty the greenhouse has to offer.  I call them mental health visits.  When I mentioned this to her, she was overcome with gratitude.  Telling me what a wonderful thing it is to be welcome all the time.

The depth of her appreciation was surprising to me,  until she explained that for several years she was trapped in her home as a result of an accident that left her unable to go anywhere.  The damage was so serious that her doctors couldn’t help her, until three months ago when she finally found a surgeon who was able to correct the problem.  Today she is able to go places and see things that, for so long, were beyond her grasp.  By the time we hung up, it was I who was overcome with thanks.  That she had called and shared at such a personal level, reminding me to never take the everyday things in my life for granted.

Today is blonde jokes day
If you’re blonde, I hope you chuckle like I do
After all, I’m a blonde, too.
At least I am when I visit my beautician often enough.

Why won’t they hire blondes as pharmacists?
They keep breaking the prescription bottles in the typewriter.

All the back-to-school excitement signals the time to start thinking about mums.  Our front benches are filled with the red, yellows, bronzes, purples and whites of the early flowering mums.  One great thing about the rains this year is they provided constant moisture so our mums have an incredible bud count. Many of you have shared how your summer annuals are looking a bit bedraggled.  Now is the time to fix that.  By replacing those non-blooming plants with mums, you will instantly bring color back into your landscape.

What do you call an eternity?
Four blondes at a four-way stop.

Iris Bulbs are Here!

Our bulk iris bulbs have arrived.  We had hoped to have them for our Iris Workshop last weekend, but sometimes plans don’t quite work out.  Plant now to insure big blooms next spring. With names like Michigan PrideJazzed UpWar Chief, and the beautiful blue bicolor Best Bet (rebloomer) they promise to put on an incredible show!

Why shouldn’t blondes have coffee breaks?
It takes too long to retrain them.

They can’t find the eleven on the phone!

Here’s a Daffy Jumping Game for You

This blonde admits that I killed Daffy three times before I realized it was up to me to not only make him jump out of the plane but also to open his parachute.

Why do blondes have “TGIF” written on their shoes?

Bonnie’s Kitchen

This recipe is from Simply Recipes. I didn’t make it myself, but emailed it to my friend, who very kindly invited me over to try them. Very good!

Buffalo Burgers

Bison Burgers
  • 2 lbs. ground bison
  • 2 T finely chopped sage
  • 1 ½ t salt
  • 2 t black pepper
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 2 T vegetable oil
  • Smokey BBQ sauce (Optional)

Saute onions in oil until translucent. Turn off heat and let cool. When the onions have cooled a bit, use your hands to gently mix them in with the bison burger meat and add the rest of the ingredients. Do not overwork the meat as it will toughen it.

Form patties, using 1/4-1/3 cup meat per patty. Here’s a tip, if you press a slight indentation in the center of each patty it will help keep the burgers in a nice disk shape when cooking. Otherwise the burger will start to get a little egg shaped.

Grill or fry the burgers on medium heat 6-7 minutes each side. Internal temp should be 140° for medium rare and 160° for well done*. Don’t press down on burgers with spatula while cooking, and keep flipping to a minimum. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Optional: Serve with lettuce, tomato, and topped with a smoky BBQ sauce.

*If you are getting the ground meat from a source you trust, that does their own grinding on site, you can usually safely cook the burgers rare or medium rare, otherwise cook recipe to well done.

An office technician got a call from a computer user.
The user told the tech that her computer was not working.
When she described the problem
the tech concluded that her computer needed to be brought in and serviced.
He told her, “Unplug the power cord, bring it up here and I’ll fix it for you.”
About ten minutes later, a blonde showed up at his door –
with the electrical cord in her hand.
