Lucy’s Story – Chapter 61

A surprisingly fashionable dummy leaning against a tree
"I hope she doesn’t tell mom where I’m hiding"

Well, the votes are in and my MOM can’t stop smiling.  I bet you can guess who’s not smiling…me and my dad, that’s who.

Looks like it’s going to be a family picture with my dad, my mom, me and, yep, the dummies!

Can I just say right here and right now that this is so lame?  When will this dumb dummy business end?

Now all my mom talks about is what kind of clothes everyone should wear for this creepy family picture.  Should we all wear Badger red clothes, dress like people do when they get married, or maybe stick straw in our clothes and pretend like we’re scarecrows?

Being a descendant of the great wolf, I never thought I would ever use these words, but, blah, blah, blah, mom!

My mom was telling us that she might pick up clothes for several different themes and after everyone has tried things on we can get a consensus on which one to go with.   Get a consensus?  What? Get input from the dummies?

Even though they outnumber us, we (being my dad and me) think that only our input should matter.  After all, it’s going to be my dad and me that are going to look like the real dummies in this thing.

Innocently, my dad asked my mom, “So, what in the world are we going to do with all the clothes we don’t use for this silly picture?”

After giving my dad one of her ‘looks’ she said to him,

“Okay, Mr. No-Fun-At-All and your four-legged-friend,”

Ouch, Mom, that really hurt!

“I’ve already thought of that.  Did you forget about the flea market that’s coming up?”

I almost got whiplash when I looked over at my dad.  His eyes were bugging out of his head, his mouth, well, he actually reminded me of a fish out of water.  His mouth was moving but no sound was coming from it.

Stumbling and tripping over each other we both ran for the back door.

Are your hanging baskets looking a little under the weather?  If so, now is a perfect time to replace them with our fiery red-orange Santa Cruz Sunset Begonia hanging baskets.  These begonias are great full sun plants that are super heat tolerant and can handle moderate drought.  And their brilliant red-orange blooms will cover the plant until frost.  They look great in a hanging basket, in a pot or all by itself in the garden.

And, are you ready for this, these gorgeous hanging baskets are now just $10 each.

Q: Who comes to a picnic but is never invited?
A: Ants.

Why not take advantage of the opportunity to turn your garage and basement clutter into cold hard cash!

Flea markets are not only fun, but they are so very easy to participate in! Just bring your treasures out to the greenhouse, display your items like you would for a garage sale, sit back and sell.  That’s all it takes to be a flea market vendor.

For participation we require a non-refundable registration fee of $25.00.  After you have your space set up on the morning of the flea market, America’s Best Flowers will present you with a $20.00 America’s Best Flowers gift card.

Each vendor will be allowed two parking spaces, which equals one booth, to display their wares.  More vendor space is available for an additional $10.00 for each parking space.  Additional space must be requested at the time of the initial registration.  Each vendor is limited to only one $20.00 America’s Best Flowers gift card regardless of the number of parking spaces (booths).  The flea market will be located in our huge blacktop parking lot.  Rain or shine!

Set up time begins at 7am.  The starting bell for the flea market is 8am and it ends at 3pm.  Vendors will need to bring their own furnishings, tables, awnings, chairs, etc.  For safety purposes all vendor vehicles must be parked in a separate area and will not be allowed in the market area until after 3pm.  Space is limited.  Don’t wait to register!

We will have a specific area set up to test electrical items.

Booths are still available for all our Flea Market dates!

To register for any of the three remaining flea markets, please either stop by the greenhouse, a registration form will be at our Customer Service desk, or senda check for the number of booths you would like to reserve. In the memo section of your check please put ‘Flea Market’.  Also, include a short note stating the specific flea market date(s), the number of booths you are registering for, a telephone number and/or email address for contact purposes.  Our mailing address is:

One man, Bob, mentioned his upcoming 37th wedding anniversary.
At the obvious nudging of his wife, he quickly corrected that to 38.

As the chuckling died down, heard from the back of the church was,
“I’d like to offer a prayer for Bob.”

I had been thinking about coloring my hair. One day while going through a magazine,
I came across an ad for a hair-coloring product featuring a beautiful
young model with hair a shade that I liked.
Wanting a second opinion, I asked my husband,
“How do you think this color would look on a face with a few wrinkles?”
He looked at the picture, crumpled it up, straightened it out and studied it again.
“Just great, hon.”

Our Kitchen

I just love it when one of our readers’ shares a recipe.  The following peach cobbler comes from Marge. It’s her favorite way to use the juicy fresh peaches that are currently available in the markets.  Summer doesn’t get any better than a bowl of warm cobbler with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.  Enjoy!!

Easy Fresh Peach Cobbler

  • 2 c peaches, peeled and sliced
  • ½ c sugar
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 c sugar
  • ½ c milk
  • 1 c flour
  • 1 ½ t baking powder
  • pinch of salt

Mix peaches with ½ c sugar.  Let stand for 30 minutes or until juice forms.  Melt butter in 2 qt baking dish.  Make batter of remaining ingredients.  Pour batter over butter, then pour fruit and juice over batter.  DO NOT STIR.  Bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes or until brown.  Serves 8-10.
