2019 Newsletter 46 – 🌞Be someone’s sunshine when the days are grey🌞

At the office, in the day care, and even at the Target, all you hear is sniffle, sneeze, and blow the nose. As much as you fight it, cold and flu season is upon us. While the grey days grow shorter, it is also hard not to get a bit of the winter blues. This is a double dose of “whammy” that can be helped with the simple addition of air purifying houseplants.
Surround yourself with the green medicine of houseplants. While all indoor plants have the ability to purify the air to a certain degree, some are more beneficial than others, removing up to 90% of toxins from the air. By adding a 10-12” size plant for every 100 square feet in your home, it will make a difference. Try these easy-to-grow plants for starters.
  • Aloe Vera (helpful in rooms of the home where you spend extended periods of time)
  • Dracena varieties (do well in low light)
  • Areca Palm (adds oxygen and moisture to the air)
  • English Ivy (also good for those with asthma and allergies)
  • Snake Plant (does well in low light and little water)
  • Spider Plant (produces oxygen)
I would also suggest growing indoor herbs. Used in teas and essential oils, these natural remedies are worth learning more about. For example, did you know peppermint can soothe headaches, relieve sinus pressure, and calm an upset stomach? Lemongrass aids digestion, regulates high blood pressure, and helps cold symptoms. Lavender, marjoram, sage, garlic, ginger . . . the list goes on.
As you pot up those herbs and houseplants, you will probably notice a lift in your spirits. Recent studies have shown that soil bacteria can aid in producing natural antidepressants and help boost immune systems. So digging in the dirt is an act of wellness, too.
Do you know what else makes me feel so much better? During the holidays, I get to visit with my friends and family that I haven’t seen since last year, and a beautiful container arrangement by the front door is the perfect greeting for visiting friends and family! Our world famous Porch Pot Make & Take events start this weekend! We will help you in crafting your own custom pot with fresh cut winter greens, berries, pine cones, botanical elements, and fun decorative additions! We hope you will join us Saturday or Sunday from 10 am-3 pm!
Until next time,
