One of the best perks of my job is attending events where we see trial and display gardens of many incredible plants before they are introduced to the general public. We get to see how they perform in different growing conditions in order to bring the pick of the litter back home to you. Did you know that many new varieties can take seven to fifteen years to move from breeding, to trials, to actual production?
Some days, I feel like I should be paying Ed and Carol to work here instead of the other way around! This last Friday was one of those times. At 6am on the dot (ok, so more like 6:15ish), several team members headed down to Ball Gardens in West Chicago for their Field Days celebration. There were so many different varieties that stood out among the 8 acres of annual and perennial trial gardens! To save on space – I’ll highlight three annuals below and post the perennials, vegetables, and herbs over on our Facebook Page later this week.
The next garden trial we are visiting is right here in our backyard! We are very fortunate to have the West Madison Agricultural Research Station over in Verona. The gardens are open to the public and we encourage you to take advantage of all they have to offer. In addition, you can help us find the next rising star by letting us know your favorites (or disappointments) from any display gardens you visit or from your own yard and garden.
Until next time,
Michele
Ball Gardens – 3 New Annual Varieties
Midnight Gold Double Petunia This show stopper was the star attraction in mixed containers and stunned by itself, in a basket as well. The dark, velvety, double blooms seemed to glow around the edges with a soft lemon coloring. Several other retailers were standing in line to get photos, so it was definitely the talk of the show. I also learned that it won a Retailers’ Choice Award™ at Cultivate’19 in Columbus Ohio last week and has been trending on Pinterest boards, Twitter, and Instagram.
I was walking through the mixed container area and was drawn closer by the mounded basket loaded with small tubular flowers. I snapped a quick photo because I knew our head grower, Dave, would really love it. Just imagine them in a nice hanging basket! According to Ball staff, this variety was bred for drought & heat tolerance and its trailing habit.
These Zinnias had our whole group stopping to take photos. They have fully double flowers and were just so bright and cheerful! These colorful Zinnias thrive in high heat, making them a vibrant addition to late Spring and Summer color programs and landscapes
