Not to toot my own horn, but I was a lean machine at 145 pounds back in 1979. If you came out to the farm back then, you would find me in bib overalls – which is basically roomy jeans with built-in suspenders. Just as a cowboy hat makes you think of Texas, a pair of bibs once suggested farming. They were what all the adult farmers in my life wore as I was growing up. In fact, I continued wearing bib overalls for many years. That was until 1986 when I was trying to impress my boss at the time. He took me aside and said, “If you want to move up in the organization, you need to shed the bibs!” From that day forward, no more bibs for me.
As the years went by, I began getting heavier and heavier. I had quite a hanging belly, with my weight peaking at 235 pounds in 2012. I wasn’t even drinking beer! I struggled to lose weight, getting to 215 pounds when the cancer thing happened two years ago. I dropped to 205 right before the diagnosis. One of the treatments resulted in having no testosterone. The main side effect? You got it: weight gain.
22 months have passed and I am finally beginning to lose weight again as the disease advances. I am now down to about 185 pounds. About a month ago, I got Shingles all around my waist. I just could not eat. That is when the weight started to fall off. Speaking of falling off, I had to get suspenders to hold up my pants!
I am sure the staff in the greenhouse wondered what was going on. Every now and then, a clip would come loose, fly into the air, and my pants would start to slip down. I had to quickly grab the pants and the suspender strap to reattach the clip. I am sure I was quite a site and created many chuckles.
I believe suspenders are so much more comfortable and I recommend them to anyone. A belt is like a tourniquet that goes around your waist. If it’s too tight, it can disrupt your circulation. Your body needs the blood to flow, so make the switch to suspenders. I don’t think I will ever go back to a belt. My recommendation: make sure you have really good clips. You can even get them in colors and patterns to express your own style!

Root Beer

Red, White & Blue Frozen Lemonade
The tart from the natural blueberries and lemon juice goes well with the sweetness of the sugar. I like that it has only few ingredients and comes together quickly.
  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cups ice cubes
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
  • Maraschino cherries
  1. Place lemon juice, sugar and ice in a blender; cover and process until slushy.
  2. Divide blueberries among four chilled glasses; muddle slightly.
  3. Add lemon slush; top with cherries.
