Last week, I started sharing the lessons I learned during our first year of planting strawberries. Now, where were we? Two weeks after planting, I missed a spray for weeds. As a result, I spent the next three weeks on my hands and knees pulling the emerging weeds, row by row. Don’t forget, this was on three acres of strawberries! We were lucky that the soil was soft and the weeds easily popped right out. The lesson here was that it is important to do things in a timely manner.
Thankfully, I was not alone in this tedious task. I had a group of ten kids, ranging from 16 to 18 years old. This was my first experience managing teenagers. The tasks were challenging, but I laid out clear expectations every day. We worked side-by-side and learned together.
The rest of that summer 40 years ago was blessedly uneventful. We settled into the days and continued to plant, care for, and successfully harvest the crops. It was hard work, but we always had time to smile and laugh. Those memories still make me smile.
All those lessons have taught me the importance of surrounding yourself with team players. Today, we have an exceptional group of individuals on the America’s Best Flowers team.
Things are very hectic these days as the greenhouses are filling up. We are starting to run out of room! In fact, I want everyone to mark their calendars for our Spring Open House on Saturday, March 30th and Sunday, March 31st. I invite you to come visit. Sit down and talk to friends, old and new. Enjoy the fresh popcorn and create memories of your own as you see, smell, touch, and take in all the joy that plants can bring into your life.
Spring will come along with all those great blooming flowers – I promise!
Signing off until next week,
