Now that my mom is 'tired', our quest to discover new lands and cross the oceans of the world can start!Gosh, I can't wait to see what's on the other side of this ocean.  This is so exciting!  I've heard stories of such wonderful discoveries in new lands.  Hmmm, perhaps we'll discover a new species of plant life, or T-Rex bones, or maybe, just maybe that fountain of youth my mom is always looking for or…''Ah, Lady? Lady!''Wha…?''Lady, snap out of it will ya? This isn't an ocean, silly girl.  This is Lake Monona. It's a wonderful lake but, we're not going to find a new species of plant life, any T-Rex bones, or, sad-to-say, a fountain of youth on the other side of it.'I was crushed, heartbroken, dejected…'Hey, how would you like to go for a long walk across the lake?'I looked at my mom, duh, is she losing it or what…walk on water, ya, right!'Lady, there is a wonderful walking path that goes all the way across the lake and it's not too far from here.  Come on, we'll have a great time and who  knows what we'll see or smell.'Smell?  She said smell, like in stinky dead fish smell?Say, who needs an ocean when I've got lovely Lake Monona in my own backyard?~Lady

All About Mums

Chrysanthemums, or mums for short, are fall blooming favorites. Their blooms last for weeks in the cool weather when other flowers peter out. A perennial in some areas, we consider them an annual in the Madison and surrounding area, or a tender perennial at best. With some extra care and mulching there’s a slight chance mums will overwinter outdoors, which is discussed below under the heading “overwintering mums”.As an annual, mums are easy to care for. The most important thing is to keep the soil evenly moist. It's especially important that the soil never completely dries out, but it also shouldn't remain soggy. Check daily for watering needs if kept in a pot and less often if in the ground. When planting in the ground, be sure it’s in well draining soil, amending the surrounding soil with compost if soil is dense or full of clay. Our mums are already blooming when you get them and still feeding from a slow-release fertilizer applied at the time they were planted, so there’s no need to fertilize. We also grow them in a larger pot, so plants are not only bigger, but also require watering less often. As blooms begin to lose their luster, they can be dead-headed, and you might just get a little extra color from the buds beneath. When shopping for mums, one thing worth noting is that different colors bloom at different times during the season. If you don’t see the color you’re looking for, check back at a later date or ask an associate for an idea of when your desired color might be available!

Overwintering Mums

In the Madison and surrounding area, mums have a slight chance of overwintering outdoors in the ground. If you try it, please remember that we do not guarantee that they will come back in the spring. We sell them as annuals, but a few people have luck growing them as perennials because they just happen to have the right conditions for it.To try overwintering fall mums, plant them deep enough so the soil level comes up to the first set of branches to better insulate the crown. Do not cut back in the fall and mulch with at least 4” of leaves, getting leaves between the branches. Another option is to cover with a layer of evergreen boughs from your Christmas tree and cover with a layer of snow for insulation. The goal is to insulate the plant so that it can maintain an even temperature throughout the winter. In the spring, trim back, fertilize and pinch blooms every 2-4 weeks until July 4th. Remember, new growth in spring is slow and comes from the rooted lower branches of last years mum.

Let my words, like vegetables, be tender and sweet…

for tomorrow I may have to eat them!

Remember how our dear Bev ran off to get married? Well, this past Saturday was the big day and it went off without a hitch! (Except for the planned hitch between Bev and Jim, of course.) We are just elated for these two wonderful people to begin the next chapter in their lives. Their next big adventure is a trip to Italy; how perfect! Our talented florists, Margaret and Barb, were so happy to create the bouquet, corsages, boutonnières, and centerpieces for this very special occasion. Bev's vision for her centerpieces was lots of color (including all primary and secondary colors), and a different combination for each table. Each component of the table was mixed-and-matched; arrangements, vases, antique doilies, and solid color table cloths. The arrangements were unique and fun, and they turned out beautifully! The bridal bouquet was a classically charming mix of white and blue to match her navy blue, white and cream wedding dress and the boutonnieres were white with a touch of red to match the mens' ties.Bev is so grateful to Margaret and Barb for sharing their talents for her big day! And what a great way for us to thank Bev for her many contributions, friendship, and profound kindness over the years, here at America's Best Flowers. We are so lucky to be able to help people with their very special day, and would love to help you with yours! Contact us for your wedding arrangements and we will gladly assist you through the process to minimize the stress of planning and make sure your special day is all you're hoping for!To order flowers or plants for delivery, for any occasion, just contact us at either our Cottage Grove location at 608-222-2269 or www.americasbestflowers.net or our Edgerton location at 608-884-8120 or 1-888-287-1411 or www.edgertonfloralandgarden.com.Please keep in mind that flower, plant and container selection may vary between our locations.

Margaret let me browse through a wonderful cookbook she has called, Insider's Recipes Master Edition. It's full of recipes of restaurant food favorites, so you can have the same delicious food without having to leave home! This recipe for a Wendy's Frosty piqued my interest the most, not only because it reminds me of summer vacation when I was a kid, but because it's such a simple recipe. I can't remember the last time I had one, so I'll be making this soon!
