Lady’s Story – Chapter 14

Little do they know, the owl was behind it the whole time.

My friend Stella came for a sleepover the other night!  Us girls played in the backyard, had treats in the backyard & hunted for ‘things’ in the backyard…if ya know what I mean.

"Hey, we found a crocodile!"

My mom was trying to get us to look at her so she could take a picture of us together in the backyard.  Me and Stella looked at each other and well, that was when the fun started. We would stand very still looking at my mom and just when she was going to push that magical button we’d look the other way.  I’m not good with counting, but I betcha this happened at least 8-9 times.  Me and Stella, well, we could hardly keep from laughing.

My mom wasn’t laughing though.  She had on her ‘grouchy face.’ (Just for clarification that’s what my dad calls ‘that face’, NOT me!)

"Oh, nope, it’s an alligator. Not interested anymore."

Please don’t tell my mom what we did.  After all, we were ‘girls just wanting to have fun!’

And the Winners Are…

"What a coincidence, that seems to be exactly the number of mums I have."

The winners of last weeks’ spectacular mum drawing were:

Lea Stokes, Penny Scott, Cindy Lobenstein, Dawn DeFoer, Nancy Jorgensen and Bruce.

Yes, there are 6 winners this week.  We accidentally chose 2 names at the same time so fair-is-fair, right?!

Student: “Well I was crossing the road and suddenly it says “School ahead, go slowly!”

18 year old, Dan was walking home from a Halloween party at his friends’ house, when he heard a thumping noise behind him. THUMP, THUMP, THUMP! When Dan turned around he saw it was a coffin behind him. Dan started walking quicker but the THUMPS were still right behind him. Soon Dan was running, the coffin started running to. Now Dan was running faster than he had ever run in his life but the coffin was still right behind him! ‘Help,’ Dan screamed! He ran into his house and tried to slam the door but the coffin caught the door and started following him up the steps, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, Dan ran into the bathroom and grabbed the first thing he saw, cough drops, and threw them at the coffin…and of course, the coffin’ stopped.

Mulching Perennials for Winter

Late fall is a great time to mulch your perennials to protect them from the stress of winter. Mulching helps keep in moisture, but more importantly, it helps regulate the temperature of the roots.

When the temperature changes and the ground temp alternates between freezing and thawing, the ground tends to heave, which can unearth plants and harm roots. Perennials have a better chance of surviving the winter when they aren’t stressed by ground heaving and they can remain dormant until it’s warm enough that there’s no chance of refreezing.

We have several kinds of mulch available. Usually it’s best to use no more than 2-3 inches and make sure you have dead plant matter cleaned up before you apply it.

Listening to them is quite common.
Arguing with them – acceptable.
It is only when you lose that argument that you get in real trouble.

We’re getting close!

The cooler is in and it’s chilling!  We are getting so very close to having floral bouquets, fresh cut flowers and fresh centerpieces at our soon-to-be floral shop at our Cottage Grove location!  This new floral shop location will make ordering flowers easier for you and delivering flowers easier for us. In the meantime our Edgerton location can provide beautiful arrangements with a little advance notice.  Give them a call at 888-287-1411.  They will create the perfect bouquet for you and we will work with them to get it delivered.

We ask that you please overlook our extra dust and mess as we do our remodeling.  We are hoping to have our floral shop up and running by the holidays!

It is important to make breaks between individual exercises.
I personally stick to breaks of about 3-4 years.

Our Kitchen

By Lauren

For the past week and a half, my sweetest, Kevin, has had some extra time and the urge to keep busy, so he’s been trying his hand at cooking! Apart from a mean Saturday morning egg scramble, he hasn’t done much cooking, so this is a new venture for him. I’m helping and encouraging him through the process to make it easier, because I’m selfless like that ;-). So far he’s successfully made stir-fry, this lentil soup, vegetarian “beef” stroganoff, and this week’s yummy tater tot casserole. Gosh, I could get used to this! I mean, um, I’m just so glad I can support him with his endeavors.

This vegetarian tater tot casserole is super easy and relatively light with mixed vegetables. I recommend doubling the recipe to get more heat-and-eat meals, though the tater tots are of course not as crispy when microwaved. This is a delicious comfort food for either a meal or side dish.

Vegetarian Tater Tot Casserole

Vegetarian Tater Tot Casserole

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 16 oz package of frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1 10.5 oz can of low-fat cream of mushroom condensed soup
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • Frozen tater tots (about half of a 1 pound package)
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. Line a medium skillet with a thin layer of water. Heat over medium-high heat until the water is very hot. Add onions and garlic, lower heat to medium, and cook for about 8 minutes or until the onions begin to soften. Add additional water, as needed.
  3. Add the frozen mixed vegetables and cook an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are heated through.
  4. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the soup and spices. Pour the vegetable and soup mixture into the casserole dish. Sprinkle the vegetables with cheese.
  5. Place tater tots in a single layer over the cheese. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Remove the foil and cook an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and the tater tots are crispy.
