For many of you it has become a tradition to bring the entire family out to the greenhouse and have Mom, Grandma or anyone else who is ‘Mothers-Day-Special’ to you, pick out their own hanging baskets and planters.  We, too, especially enjoy this weekend because we get to see so many of you.  

We will be open from 8 in the morning to 8 at night this Saturday.  

It’s going to be a very busy weekend at our greenhouse so we’d like to mention that the easiest hours to shop on Saturday, will be either early in the morning from 8-10 or later in the afternoon/evening from 4-8.   For Sunday, the easiest hours to shop will be either 9-11 or 3-5. We look forward to seeing you and your families this weekend.

We can help!  Stop out and pick up an America’s Best Flowers gift card for your mom, grandma, aunt or special lady.  If you’re in a hurry, just call us at 608-222-2269 and we’ll take your order and payment over the phone.  Your gift card will then be ready for you to pick up at our front Customer Service Desk.

Remember, our gift cards do not have an expiration date and may be used at both our Cottage Grove location and our Edgerton location.

For a Hands-on Mother’s Day Gift

There is still time to come out and create a special Mother’s Day gift at our Make & Take Workshop.  Today (Thursday, May 5) from 5-7 pm, our container workshop area will be devoted to Mother’s Day creations.  Plant a special gift for Mom, Grandma, a favorite aunt or a special friend.  America’s Best Flowers has a wonderful selection of beautiful plants, flowers and herbs for you to choose from along with a wide variety of potteries.  You are welcome to register by calling 222-2269 or just stop on out.

Mid-Week Container Garden
Make and Take Workshop

Tuesday, May 10th 5:30-7:30

If you can’t make it to one of our weekend Make and Take Workshops, how about a Tuesday evening one?  Come on out next Tuesday, between 5:30-7:30 and create your very own garden masterpiece.

Here is the procedure for the Make and Take Workshop:

  1. Sign in at the Make and Take Workshop registration table located near the back of the main greenhouse.   You will receive a worksheet at this time which we will complete after your container is finished.
  2. Shop for your plants, flowers, and containers.
  3. Return to the registration area and pick your spot in our designated workshop area and let the fun begin!

It’s a hands-on experience, so be sure to bring your gardening gloves.  If you forget them, don’t worry, we have a wide variety of reasonably priced gardening gloves to choose from.  Our knowledgeable and friendly associates will be happy to assist you while you do the planting and will help with any and all plant or design questions.

We do ask that if you bring in containers from home, please EMPTY all soil from them before bringing them to our greenhouse.  To participate in our container workshops and receive FREE POTTING SOIL AND ASSISTANCE, a minimum plant purchase of $10.00 is required per container the day of the container workshop.

Lighten Your Load

If you are bringing in large containers please bring in packing peanuts chunks of Styrofoam (not biodegradable Styrofoam), or Styrofoam egg cartons to help fill the bottom of your container.  We do not carry packing peanuts at our greenhouse. In addition to providing great drainage, it makes the container a whole lot lighter for you to transport back home and also, easier to rearrange in your garden if you want to change your outside decor.

No matter how old a mother is, she watches her middle-aged children for signs of improvement.

This is the perfect recipe for a Mother’s Day Sunday brunch! It’s an easy recipe with just enough fancy ingredients, like portabella mushrooms and gouda cheese, to make it something special. The mothers in your life will love it, but then again, they’ll love anything you make for them. Just don’t burn it! 🙂

This quiche is savory, filling, and would be perfect as a main dish or a side. Personally, I enjoy a piece of quiche with a side of fresh mixed fruit like honeydew, strawberries, and blueberries. Mmmm… so yummy!

Three-Cheese Mushroom Spinach Quiche

  • 1 refrigerated pie crust, softened as directed on box
  • 1 t vegetable oil
  • 3 portabella mushrooms, sliced
  • ½ onion, sliced
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 box (9 oz) frozen chopped spinach, thawed, squeezed to drain
  • 1 t minced onion
  • 1/3 cup egg whites (about 3 egg whites)
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ t salt
  • ¼ t pepper
  • 1 cup Gouda cheese, shredded
  • ¾ cup Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 to 2 T Gorgonzola (or any blue cheese), crumbled
  • ¼ t dried parsley leaves

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Make 1 pie crust in 9-inch glass pie plate as directed on box. Using fork, poke holes in the base all over and bake according to package directions.

2. Meanwhile in medium skillet, heat oil. Add mushrooms and onion slices; cook over medium-high heat until soft, about 4 to 5 minutes. Cool slightly.

3. In medium bowl, combine milk, spinach, minced onion, egg whites, eggs, salt and pepper; stir until all ingredients are well combined.

4 Stir in Gouda cheese, Cheddar cheese and cooled mushrooms mixture. Pour egg mixture into pie shell. Sprinkle Gorgonzola cheese over top. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until center is puffed and light golden brown. Cool 10 minutes.
