More Fun This Weekend At Our Greenhouse!

We are having another Container Garden Make and Take Workshop this Saturday and Sunday, April 30-May 1.  The workshop starts each day at 10 and is ongoing throughout the day till 4.  Come in anytime between those hours.

Here is the procedure for the Make and Take Workshop:

  1. Sign in at the Make and Take Workshop registration table located near the back of the main greenhouse.   You will receive a worksheet at this time which we will complete after your container is finished.
  2. Shop for your plants, flowers, and containers.
  3. Return to the registration area and pick your spot in our designated workshop area and let the fun begin!

It’s a hands-on experience, so be sure to bring your gardening gloves.  If you forget them, don’t worry, we have a wide variety of reasonably priced gardening gloves to choose from.  Our knowledgeable and friendly associates will be happy to assist you while you do the planting and will help with any and all plant or design questions.

We do ask that if you bring in containers from home, please EMPTY all soil from them before bringing them to our greenhouse.  To participate in our container workshops and receive FREE POTTING SOIL AND ASSISTANCE, a minimum plant purchase of $10.00 is required per container the day of the container workshop.

Lighten Your Load

If you are bringing in large containers please bring in packing peanuts, chunks of Styrofoam or Styrofoam egg cartons to help fill the bottom of your container.  We do not carry packing peanuts at our greenhouse. In addition to providing great drainage, it makes the container a whole lot lighter for you to transport back home and also, easier to rearrange in your garden if you want to change your outside decor.

Gardening Rule:
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Do you know?

To have a successful container garden there is some information that you’ll need to know beforehand.  Such as, where are your containers going to be located; in the sun, in the shade or a little of both?  Different plants and flowers have different needs.  Do you want to just water them and watch them grow or are you okay with periodically removing the dead blooms?  It is this kind of information that will allow us to help you choose the right plants and flowers for your situation.  Our container garden designers will be here to answer any and all of your questions.

Logo of Saint Vincent de Paul

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 29 – May 1, you have the opportunity to help the St. Vincent de Paul’s community garden.  By donating a $1.99 pack of tomatoes or Lady Bell peppers for their gardens, the food pantry will be able to offer fresh vegetables to many families this season.   For every pack of vegetables you donate, America’s Best Flowers will give an additional $.50 towards the SVDP gardens.

Q: Where does a cat go when he loses his tail?
A: The retail store!

New Products Corner

Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!

Who can resist an adorable litter of kittens?  Each and every one of these cute little kittens AND cats are in need of a good home.  These critters are very, very low maintenance.  They don’t even shed!  Simply wipe them off occasionally with a damp cloth and that’s it.  And they’ll put a smile on your face every time you look at them.  (And we speak from experience.)

While you are here take a look at our dog statues.  These realistic critters are maintenance free and are made of durable lightweight poly-resin.

As with ‘real’ pets these indoor or outdoor pets need special protection from the elements.  Ice and snow will damage them and direct sunlight will cause weathering and fading.

Time’s sure fun when you’re having flies!

Friendly Dogs Are Welcome at Our Greenhouse

Important Warm Weather Pet Information

Dog holding its leash in its mouth

Friendly dogs (on leashes) are always welcome at America’s Best Flowers.

If you forget to bring a leash, just stop at our Customer Service Desk or our perennial area and borrow one of ours.  We’ll even have a bowl of fresh water for thirsty dogs inside the greenhouse.

Please keep your pet safe this summer!  During warm weather it’s dangerous to leave your pet in the car for any amount of time.  Running into a store for just a gallon of milk can even be too long!

Please read the following article from the ASPCA website

From ASPCA – The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®

102 degrees!

On an 85 degree day, it only takes ten minutes for the inside of your car to reach 102 degrees even when the windows have been left open an inch or two.  Within 30 minutes, a car’s interior can reach 120 degrees.  When the temperature outside is a pleasant 70 degrees the inside of your car may be as much as 20 degrees hotter.  Shade offers little protection on a hot day and moves with the sun.

Pets most at risk for hyperthermia (overheating): young animals, elderly animals, overweight animals, those with short muzzles and those with thick or dark-colored coats.

Our Kitchen

Warm weather means it’s time to set out the lawn furniture, fire up the grill and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends and food.

Here’s an easy recipe for guacamole dip that works with nacho chips, crackers or as a dollop on a grilled burger.  We hope you enjoy! Olé!

Guacamole Dip

Guacamole Dip
  • 6 Ripe Avocados
  • ½ Red Onion, diced small
  • ½ T Garlic Sea Salt
  • 1 T chopped fresh Cilantro
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Add chopped tomatoes if desired.

Remove pits and scoop out pulp of avocados into a large bowl, and mash in bowl until mostly smooth. Add remaining ingredients, mix well and let rest one hour before serving. To store, cover directly with plastic wrap; smooth over by hand to eliminate any air gaps and refrigerate.
