Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Recently the Wall Street Journal had an article about the Buffetts.  The most famous one, Warren, receives many requests for money, which he forwards to his 79 year old sister, Doris Buffett, who runs the Sunshine Lady Foundation.  While it is very rare for foundations to work directly with individuals, Doris has a crew of part-time helpers and together they research the requests and decide what the greatest need is and how they can satisfy it. The applicants never receive enough to solve all their financial needs, their goal being to empower but not enable.  They have given away over $1.4 million dollars, with the average gift being $4,800.

Ms. Buffett is a wealthy woman, and could be doing anything she would like but has chosen to spend her time helping people in need.  This type of commitment to others is Ms. Buffett’s way of giving a bit of her heart.

One way America’s Best Flowers’ gives a bit of our heart is by working with non-profit organizations’ fundraising campaigns.  This spring we were able to help area churches and schools raise funds for a myriad of activities and programs.  These programs have included youth groups traveling to help with disaster relief from Hurricane Katrina and youth missionary trips to undeveloped countries to help with construction of homes.

In addition to our fundraising program, America’s Best Flowers donates 1% of all purchases made by our loyalty customers to charities of their choice.  Several years ago, with the initiation of the Customer Loyalty Program we decided to let our customers choose where our charitable contributions should go.  Since that time we have given thousands of dollars to these organizations in our customers’ names.

We feel so blessed to be able to help our community in these ways, but realize that it is truly our customers who make it possible.  If customers didn’t shop here there would be no need for the gift certificates the fundraisers sell nor any percentage for the charities to receive.   In recognition of our wonderful customers, this weekend, August 18 & 19, we are having Customer Appreciation Days.  Please join us.

Saturday and Sunday we will be serving fresh, hot sweet corn from 11 – 3 both days.  Thelma, our outstanding customer service associate, will be cooking it up just for you.  Let us show you how much we appreciate your business by sharing some of the bounty of the season with you.

BUY 1 GET 1 FREE on all trees, shrubs and roses.  All other plants, including annuals, perennials, water plants and tropicals are 35% off.  This cool weather is ideal for planting.  Take advantage of these great prices to fill in empty spaces or create entire new gardens.

We have gone crazy with special markdowns throughout the greenhouse on our garden accessories.  Too many items to mention have been reduced from 25 – 50%.  We normally do price reductions in September, after Dollar Days, but this year we have decided to show our appreciation by passing savings on to you early enough for you to enjoy your purchases this summer.

In addition to hundreds of clearance items, we have pulled out all the stops and cleaned both the little and big red sheds.  Talk about treasures!  We have many odds and ends, slightly used or damaged merchandise, and lots of miscellaneous that we have marked at GARAGE SALE prices just for you.

To make the deals even sweeter, for the first time ever we are offering DOUBLE ABF DOLLARS on all sales during Customer Appreciation Weekend.  Normally you receive $1 for every $10 you spend.  This Saturday and Sunday only, August 18 and 19, we will be doubling that amount.  Spend $10 get $2, spend $100 get $20, spend $1000 get $200!! These dollars can be used during our Dollar Days, September 8 – 16, for up to half your purchase on anything we sell.  This is a great opportunity to treat yourself to those great garden items you’ve been wanting.

Come on out this weekend and let us say “Thanks.”  We look forward to seeing you.

1 salmon fillet 1 ½ – 2 lbs

2 T cider vinegar

2 T soy sauce

1 T honey

1 t vegetable oil

1 t spicy brown mustard

1/8-1/4 t ground ginger

2 T sesame seeds, toasted

3 green onions, sliced

Place salmon in shallow dish. Combine vinegar, soy sauce, honey, oil, mustard, and ginger. Pour over salmon.

Cover and refrigerate 1 hour, turning once. Drain and discard marinade. Grill until fish flakes easily with a fork. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and onions. YUM!

Chocolate – the OTHER major food group.

Ok all you chocoholics, here’s a recipe from a cookbook called “Celebrity Chefs” by Unity Health and the Rochester City Ballet.  I have not made it, but am planning to this weekend.  It certainly is different. Please give me your feedback if you try it.

Chocolate Coffee Steak

4 steaks

½ dark chocolate bar, shaved

1 T chili powder

1 T black pepper

½ c freshly ground coffee

Grind coffee and mix in chili powder, black pepper, and shaved chocolate in a small bowl.  Tenderize steaks and rub in dry marinade.  Sear both sides quickly on grill to melt chocolate. Grill to preference.  Great with grilled asparagus spears!
